Casterton claws come out against Saints

Casterton Sandford v Nangwarry

Casterton Sandford hosted Nangwarry on Sunday and came away with a big win over the Saints in Limestone Coast Women’s Football action.

The Cats started strong in the opening quarter, holding the Saints to one point.

Up forward the Cats struggled, kicking two goals and eight minor scores, however they held a 19 point lead at the first break.

In the second term the Cats began to pull away from the Saints, kicking five goals and holding the Saints scoreless, taking a 55 point lead into half time.

The Saints continued to struggle in the third as they went scoreless for another quarter while Casterton continued to add to their
 lead.

The Cats dominated with a six goal quarter, taking their lead to 98 points heading into the final term.

The Cats closed out the win in strong fashion, kicking four goals to seal the 128 point victory.

Casterton’s Tessa Marra finished as her side’s best while Holly Smith was the game’s leading goal kicker with seven.

Casterton Sandford defeated Nangwarry 17.27 (129) to 0.1 (1).

North Gambier v Millicent

North Gambier took on Millicent on Sunday at Blue Lake Sports Park and picked up another win.

The Tigers started slowly for their standards, only kicking one goal while putting four minor scores on the board.

Despite the slow start they were still in command as they held the Saints scoreless and took a 10 point lead into the second term.

The Tigers continued to slowly add to their lead in the second quarter but struggled to put the game to bed as they only added one goal to their total.

By half time the Tigers held a 16 point lead.

In the third term North began to put the game out of reach for the Saints as they registered four goals on the board.

Millicent, on the other hand, were able to get a goal on the board but it was not enough to cut into the lead as they trailed by 38 points heading into the final term.

In the final term the Tigers did well to hold off the Saints as they only scored one point, however it did not go a long way into cutting the Tigers’ lead despite North only scoring a point as well.

North Gambier defeated Millicent 6.10 (46) to 1.2 (8).

Kybybolite v Penola

Kybyboilte continued their undefeated start to the season with a win over Penola on Sunday in Casterton.

The Tigers started strong in the opening term kicking four goals which gave them a solid lead as they held the Eagled scoreless to begin the match.

After the opening term the Tigers held a 28 point lead.

The Tigers continued their defensive work in the second as they held Penola scoreless again while running their lead up with another four goal quarter.

After a big first half for Kyby they went into half time with a 55 point lead.

In the third term Penola finally got some things to go their way as they scored their first goal.

However Kyby’s lead was just a bit out of reach, despite only kicking one goal and three behinds in the quarter.

After a more competitive third term the Tigers headed into the final term with a comfortable 57 point lead.

The Eagles were able to get another major score on the board but it was not anywhere near enough to compete with Kyby’s lead as they added another three goals to seal the 74 point win.

Kyby’s Georgie Stott was named as the best for the Tigers while Zoe Harvey, Madeleine Huggins and Elle Treloar all chipped in with three goals each.

Kybybolite defeated Penola 12.15 (87) to 2.1 (13).

South Gambier v Kongorong

Kongorong came away with a thrilling win over South Gambier on Sunday at Blue Lake Sports Park.

Both sides started slow with the Hawks getting out to a small six point lead with a goal in the opening quarter.

Both sides struggled to put many points on the board in the second as they went back and forth with possession.

By half time the Hawks still held the six point lead from the first term.

In the second half the Dees finally put some scoreboard pressure on Kongorong, kicking two goals in the half which made it tight heading towards the final siren.

Despite a two goal second half from the Dees it was not enough as the Hawks also kicked two goals which was enough to come away with their second win of the season.

Kongorong’s Stephanie Granziera was named best on for the game while captain Evie Sealey kicked three goals in the tight win.

Kongorong defeated South Gambier 3.3 (21) to 2.1 (13).

After four rounds of footy Mundulla, North Gambier and Kybybolite are all undefeated while Casterton Sandford closes out the top four with a 2-2 record.

Down the bottom of the ladder are Nangwarry and South Gambier who are still searching for their first win.
