Casting with Coatsy

A bit of rain about over the weekend was not enough to stop anglers from trying their luck on the water, there were some nice catches reported to me so far, so let’s get into it.

The offshore guys had a bit of wind and swell against them for the most part of last week, but those down there who were able to sneak out when conditions allowed found plenty of tuna.

Wilbur and Carn from Southerly Fishing Charters got their clients on to some real mixed bags of fish this week.

Tuna, gummy shark, snapper and a nice mixture of other bottom fish made for a great few days on the water.

There has been the odd whisper of big fish this week from way down the east, but I’m yet to see any pictures.

School shark have been on the move in close along the coast for the last few weeks now making them a very good target for both surf and boat based fishos.

Danger and Green Points are the hot spots for the bigger fish, with some being right up near that 30kg mark.

There are plenty of gummy shark mixed in with the schoolies, so get down there and have a crack.

Salmon fishos have managed some lovely fish this week to 2kg and better along Canunda NP and into the Oil Rig.

Bait fishos still seem to have the upper  hand while the fish are not super con- centrated yet, but the signs are still very  encouraging for a big season ahead.

I have to keep reminding myself that it’s still only May and the best is still yet to come! There were some nice fish to around 1kg caught in both the salmon hole and Lighthouse Bay over the weekend on a mixture of baits and lures, the size is slowly getting better and the numbers seem to be ever improving also.

I have heard of some nice flathead to 50cm caught in the Lighthouse Bay area by the bait fishos, so if you can manage one or two of those on top of some salmon, you’re doing well! There have been some good reports again this week of nice gar from the Cape Douglas and Livingstons Bay areas.

Waders and boaties are both sharing the success, the only secret is to get the burley happening, then wait until they come to you.

There are plenty of areas to chase the humble old gar, inside the Port MacDonnell  Breakwater is a great spot if you’re new to the game, but any sheltered bay with a nice sea grass bed is worthy of a dabble.

Tommies, mullet, salmon trout, small whiting and other bits and pieces will all frequent the same areas, so there’s plenty of variety on offer.

There are a few nice redfin still being caught this week even though the weather has cooled down a lot.

Mill Swamp is still very popular and fish- ing well and although the size has not been  like what were used to in summer, it’s still a great place to go and get into a few fish.

I have heard of some nice redfin from Lake Koonongwootong in Coleraine, but remember its electric motor or paddle power only on that lake.

There is some nice trout in there too, but they’re getting pretty cagey and harder to catch.

The Glenelg is starting to heat up more and more each week, be it from more fish on the move, or more anglers down there having a crack, I’m not sure, but we’re going the right direction! The mulloway news has been very spread out this week.

I know of a 97cm fish boated in the Sandy  Waterhole area on bait over the week- end, plus quite a few in that 65cm to 85cm  bracket.

Darren Brown managed a 68cm model around the caves area, plus a few smaller fish too.

The bream have been spread out again this week, I have seen some nice ones from up high around Dartmoor and plenty from down low too.

Baits seemed to be the go this week with prawn and crab being the front runners, but those targeting perch did well on galaxia minnows and other small deep diving lures.

The forecast for this week looks to be  improving, hopefully enough so the off- shore guys can get an opportunity to get  onto the water.

If not, the river or heading inland is another great option.

Until next week, safe fishing!
