CBL champions crowned

Two Limestone Coast teams brought home the silverware from the Country Basketball League’s grand finals played in Warrnambool on Saturday night.

Mount Gambier’s Chemist King Lakers men’s team won the South West conference grand final, comprehensively beating the Ararat Redbacks.

In the women’s final, the Millicent Magic claimed the title, downing rivals the Mount Gambier Lakers.

Mount Gambier men’s coach Kane de Wit led by example and was named the game’s most valuable player.

The score was locked at 40-all at half time, before the Lakers put the foot down in the second half to come out winners 91-77.

De Wit and teammate Simon Berkefeld were named in the CBL South West Men’s competition All Star 5, along with Millicent’s Jack Haggett.

The Millicent Magic women claimed their third title, having previously won grand finals in 2019 and 2020.

The Magic were up 36-24 at half time, before powering away to down the Lakers 64-45.

Millicent’s Emily Winter was named MVP for the match.

Winter was also named in the women’s All Star 5, along with Mount Gambier’s Sarah Ritter.
