Centenary celebration

The Millicent RSL sub branch has celebrated its centenary with a special celebration.

The branch, which was formed on November, 2 1919, moved to its current North Terrace premises on May 1, 1957.

The current building was built and paid for by the sub-branch on land leased from the council.

The celebrations to mark then centenary included the presentation of a certificate of congratulations signed by the SA Premier Steven Marshall.

Member for MacKillop Nick McBride presented the certificate to subbranch president Chris Mathias and spoke of the importance of the services provided to the local veteran and ex-service community by the RSL.

He emphasised the relevance of the organisation over the years following many periods of war and its continuing relevance to veterans of contemporary conflicts and the ex-service community.

Wattle Range Mayor Des Noll reiterated the comments of the importance of the RSL and stated his support for the local sub-branch.

Mayor Noll also said he supported it continuing in its current location, considering recent discussions in council about the proposed location of new council offices and the effect it would have on the sub-branch.

Mr Mathias thanked the state and local government representatives for their kind and supportive comments and spoke of the support and welfare ser vices the members provide to the ex-service community on a daily basis.

“The sub-branch’s premises are the local heart of the RSL and are the centre for its commemorative events and welfare services,” he said.

The presentation was followed by a morning tea and discussion about issues concerning the ex-service community.
