Central a class above at halfway mark

At the halfway point of the 2020-21 Mount Gambier and District Baseball season Central remains undefeated.

In the last round of games of the year, Central drew first blood against South Indians in the top of the first.

Consecutive safe-hits by Kyall McClean and Nathan Meinck kicked off proceedings and the pair both scored along with Dylan Gull.

South could only manage to peg back the score by one, but tightened the score-line in the fourth adding one more.

Bruce Morale playing in his 400th game was batted in by Brian Whitwell after hitting a two-bagger.

The Magpies’ lead grew in the fifth and sixth digs when Koby Chant found himself at first after his hits created errors and was batted in on both occasions.

Two more unearned runs followed for Central at the top of the eighth, while South added its third and final run in the bottom of the inning when Morale collected his third safe-hit and finally scored on Steve Isaccson’s hit into an infield error.

The Magpies rubbed salt into the wound in the top the final inning adding four runs from Jordan Aston, Ethan Chuck, Alex Ridding and Kyall McClean.

However, South did not give up and loaded the bases with none out, but Central’s defence did not concede any runs to ensure an eight-run win.

The Magpies only scored two more safe hits than the Indians in the contest. Millicent hosted a travelling Federal and the visitors were first on the board in the top of the second.

Alex Reppin drew a base on ball before Matt Nicholls flyball to centre-field was dropped and the former managed to steal home, while the latter was batted in by Jack Howard’s hit into an infield error.

Kial Poole, led off the Bandits in the even inning and hit first base after an infield error and was batted in by Saxon Altschwager.

Millicent took the lead after compiling two more runs in the next inning from Jack Hateley and Darcy Pink.

Federal hauled one back in the fifth when Alex Pearson picked a walk and was given the free run on a pitcher’s balk.

Not to be outdone, Nick Pink for the Bandits hit safely to centre-field and crossed the plate on another wild throw from the Federal infield.

Millicent took the game by the throat in the next inning.

Anthony Mutton singled, Jesse Altschwager found himself at first on another infield error and the pair both scored after Nick Pink’s hit to the infield caused another error.

Pink crossed home-plate on Hateley’s infield out, while Tim Nieuwenhuizen picked a walk and was batted in by Saxon Altschwager’s right-field safe-hit.

The Bandits’ final two runs came in the bottom of the eighth with Nick Pink and Hateley both successful.

The Demons made no impression on the scorebook in their final at bat leaving Millicent winners 10 runs to three.
