Championship places decided

The weather was cool but fine for the second qualifying round of the Mount Gambier Golf Club Ladies Championship.

The Attamurra course played true thanks Greens Superintendent Jake Powell which gave players the best opportunity to fight for the placings in the A, B and C Grade qualifying rounds which were finalised after last Wednesday’s competition.

Off thestick scores were the most important in the day’s competition and in A Grade current club champion Kerry Pedlar (9) proved her class.

She headed the leading group with a great 83 off the stick and split of 40/43 including nine pars.

In second place, 15 shots behind once scores were combined was Faye Mainwaring (12).

Mainwaring’s split was 42/47 and her round was highlighted by a spectacular birdie on the par three sixth.

Not too far behind was Carol Davis (14) with a combined score of 183.

Davis bettered the difficult back nine with 44 off the stick while collecting a 47 on the front and a total of six pars.

In the B Grade qualifying round in-form player Janina Morrison (22) cemented first place with respective rounds 91 and 100 to collect 191.

She was very consistent scoring a 50/50 split for her round.

Only one shot behind was another consistent player, Helen McIntyre (19) with a combined score of 192.

A further shot behind was long standing member Di O’Donnell (21) who carded 47/50 for the day.

Disappointingly there were only three qualifiers for C Grade with Vicki Clark proceeding straight into the decider, while Heather Chapman and Jess Parsons were the other two payers to qualify.

Played in conjunction with the qualifying round was a Stableford event which was won by newcomer Liz Clements with 32 points.

Clements had a lighting start scoring 20 points on the front nine

Next week will be the semi-finals from 8.45am, while non-qualifiers will be play a Stableford event.

A good field of 21 ladies played a Stableford event last Saturday in perfect autumn weather.

Visitor, Susan Wilton (16) from the Warrnambool Golf Club took a liking to the Mount Gambier course and claimed the honours with 37 points.

Her round included a birdie on the 18th and five pars.

In the podium once again enthusiastic golfer Vicki Clark (26) who had a consistent game scoring 34 points to take out second place.

Yvonne Shirley (25) was unlucky to come in third on a count-back from Clark despite scoring 21 points on the front.
