Changing of the guard at Port MacDonnell

Port MacDonnell Football Club has filled its senior football coaching role.

At the end of the 2022 football season Simon Merrett hung up his coaching hat after two successful years which included a premiership.

This meant the club was in search for another leader that could take the role and develop it to be a force to be reckoned with come the 2023 season.

After a few short weeks, the Demons announced their A Grade leader for 2023 will be Josh Woodall.

“I got the opportunity to coach Port MacDonnell which is extremely exciting not only for myself but my family,” he said.

“This will be my first time as a head coach but the last three to four years I have been an assistant coach in a support role.”

Woodall comes to the club with a good reputation and exceptional resume, with his playing career starting at North Gambier.

“I played my Juniors at North Gambier and then went back to Dartmoor and won an A grade premiership at the age of 16 and then went back to North Gambier and won another premiership,” he said.

“I then went to Adelaide for 10 years and played Glenelg footy up there.

“Went to Mount Burr for a couple of years and won two premierships there.

“Went back to South Gambier this year which was a good year and a great club to be a part of but we did not get the results we wanted.”

With the season ending in a disappointing grand final defeat for South, Woodall’s focus now turns to the Bay.

“I honestly want to do well, develop the young kids, and want to have a strong game plan to play finals footy and create a good culture around the club,” he said.

“Just want everyone on the same page right from the juniors to the seniors learning and bringing my knowledge down from Adelaide.

“I want everyone to play a team role and we will be very competitive.

“Walking into a side that has the best two ruckman will help the way we want to play footy.”

Woodall is also happy that much of the core bunch of players have signed on for next season.

And in more good news for the club last year’s captain Mark Smith has signed on the dotted line for the Demons along with Tim Sullivan and Will McDonald.
