Charity book shop turns page

Aprominent service club has put a temporary halt to donations of books from the public of Millicent and district.

The Lions Club of Wattle Range Lioness usually appreciates such community donations to sell at its bookshop in George Street.

All the money raised through the shop over almost a decade has helped to fund the work it does for the local community as well as grants to charities, causes and community groups.

Thanks to the generosity of donors and buyers, tens of thousands of dollars have been raised and the book store has become a tourist attraction in its own right.

Arguably its most famous customer was Adelaide broadcaster Peter Goers who purchased a dozen books when last in Millicent in 2016.

The store is open each Friday and Saturday and 15 service club members voluntarily staff it on a roster basis.

However, the bookshop is on the move again and to ease the packing up process, no additional books are required at this time.

It is anticipated donations will be accepted again in early September after the new home of the book shop opens in the Millicent CBD.

In order to maximise its returns, the Lions Club of Wattle Range Lioness has always sought premises where there is either no rent payable or the space is available on very favourable terms.

The downside to such an arrangement is that long-term leases are not in place and so the book shop only stays in the one location for an average of about two years.

After being a pop-up stall at some Geltwood Markets, the book store has had three other bricks-and-mortar homes.

“We plan to announce our new location in the near future,” a club spokesperson said.

“All going well, we hope to be able to open a third day each week.”

As part of the packing-up and moving process, the prices of some books have been even further discounted.
