Christmas lunch spreads festive cheer

The Mount Gambier Christmas Day Lunch will once again spread Christmas cheer this holiday season.

Proudly supported by Mount Gambier City Council the event will again take place at City Hall and helps brighten the lives of the people in our community who may otherwise spend Christmas Day alone.

Lead organiser Kevin Douglas said the event brings joy to those attending as well as volunteers on the day.

“This is at least one day over the Christmas period people can look forward to,” he said.

“Living in the community for a while I have realised most of us are lucky but there is a lot of people who through various reasons are not as fortunate.

“You can sense by the number of people who wish to be volunteers that we have got a fantastic community down here and when they see there is a definite need they certainly jump on board. I am proud to be part of it.”

The day includes a bus to and from City Hall, a gift bag, three course meal and entertainment, with bookings essential for catering purposes.

“Our maximum is 100 people and I expect it will be fully booked in a few weeks,” he said.

“I would like to thank our generous sponsors the Mount Gambier City Council, Kimberly-Clark Australia, Collins Court Butcher and She’s Apples.”

Mr Douglas is appealing for somebody to take over the Christmas Lunch to continue the initiative for years to come.

“I have simplified it over the last couple of years in terms of decorations, so it is reasonably easy to organise and I am just hoping that somebody is willing to take it on because after seven or eight years, it is time that I went and saw my kids and grandkids,” he said.
