Christmas show wraps up season

Christmas show wraps up season

The Blue Lake BMX Club will drop the gate one final time tomorrow night as it completes the 2020 season in style.

The club will complete its final ride around its challenging circuit from 6.30pm on Friday before a Christmas show and presentations on Sunday afternoon.

The season finale wraps up a dramatic year for all within the Limestone Coast BMX community as they have been busy racing around an interrupted year.

Although lockdowns imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic slowed proceedings, Blue Lake BMX was almost able to hold its full calendar of rounds in 2020.

A total of 18 race meetings will be completed, which is just four short of pre-coronavirus times.

The highlight of the season was Mount Gambier hosting the state championships, while riders have also enjoyed a number of smaller races.

Blue Lake BMX Club president Stephen Jones said 2020 has been a challenging year and is thankful for all of the support which made it possible.

“I am looking forward to a rest personally, it has been a busy year,” he said. “But we have a good committee and club, so everyone has done their bit and made it happen.

“The council have been a big support to help us get the races on with all of the COVID stuff.

“They helped us with equipment and management plans to help us get it organised.”

With the world changing so much this year, Jones said the club tried to race whenever it found a free spot in the calendar. “When we could race, we pushed them in,” he said.

“It meant we gained a few races plus we had the state titles this year as well. “We were able to get 18 race meetings done, so we nearly caught up to normal.

“It has been a tough year, but I like to think we have made the best of it.”

Friday night’s action will see each class take part it five fast-paced races with the winner decided in a final or by accumulating the most points throughout the round.

Once all of the racing is done, riders and families will return to the club for a joyful Christmas show and presentations ceremony.

Jones said the presentations will have a slightly unique feel after the club used a new method of deciding its winners for the season.

“Normally we run a lot of little series through the year with a club championship round, but this year with COVID we have done it a little bit differently,” he said.

“We have used all of the club races we have done through the breaks and made it one big series with the 10 best rounds from every rider going towards it, so it will be a bigger presentations night.

“It will probably be more fair and there is the overall club champion up for grabs and also the junior, intermediate and senior rider of the year.”

Racing will begin from 6.30pm on Friday night, while Sunday’s presentations take place from 11am.
