The annual Beachport Vacswim program sponsored by the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing, attracted record numbers this year. The impressive total of 325 participants was a huge increase in enrolments from last year's program which had 275. No less than 12 instructors taught Surf Life Saving water safety skills and swimming over a week-long period, along with five assistant instructors. There were also up to 10 volunteers helping out and most of these were Stage 10 participants. The program was run over two beaches either side of the Beachport jetty. Older participants were also given the opportunity to complete a Senior First Aid course during the program and some participants have since completed their Surf Rescue Certificate as part of the Beachport Surf Life Saving Club to assist with the Nippers program and patrols.

Coastal cray festival program takes shape

The program for the inaugural Beachport Crayfish Festival is taking shape.

Wattle Range Council has set aside seed funding for the March 5 event and it has won the support of key community groups such as the Beachport District Development Association and the Lions Club of Beachport and Rivoli Bay.

A range of locally made food and wines will be incorporated within a program filled with art, music and children’s activities.

It will be based at Centennial Park and incorporate the regular Beachport Market stalls.

There will be a Kid’s Zone and staged cooking demonstrations.

Attendance will be by pre-sold tickets with a limit of 2000.

The organising committee is looking to secure sponsors.

Around two decades ago, the Beachport Festival By The Sea was a popular annual drawcard.

It culminated in 2000 with a free outdoors evening concert alongside the Beachport jetty by 60 members of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
