Work to re-mediate storm damage at Southend has recently been completed in a project jointly funded by Wattle Range Council and the Coastal Protection Board.
Wattle Range Council addressed an urgent safety issue associated with coastal erosion on the Southend foreshore with the support of local contractor Bowman Earthmoving.
A strong storm in late July resulted in a major loss of the frontal dune along a section of Southend’s coast resulting in council making the difficult decision to close this section of beach to the public.
The matter was referred to the Coastal Protection Board as an urgent issue, with the board providing $40,000 to replace the lost sand as a result of the storm event.
Council is pleased to advise these works have now been completed, which will allow for this section of the beach to be re-opened.
Mayor Des Noll said he was pleased the council had been able to address this issue before the busy summer period.
“These beaches are so important to both the community and tourists, so we are pleased to be able to undertake these works,” Mayor Noll said.
“I would like to thank the Coastal Protection Board for allocating funds to allow council to address this issue for the community. We acknowledge that this is only a short-term solution and that we will require further decisions and a significant financial commitment to address the longer-term issues of coastal erosion.
The next step will be for council to discuss longer term solutions for coastal erosion at both Southend and Beachport that were recommended in a recent study of the local coastal environment.
