Digital delight for Limestone Coast

Anew Telstra 4G mobile base station at Keilira was officially turned on this week.

The new 40-metre high tower was delivered thanks to a $891,700 partnership with the State Government, Telstra and the Kingston District Council.

Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development David Basham said digital connectivity was vital for people living and working in regional South Australia for safety, service delivery as well as opening up new economic opportunities.

“The Limestone Coast community has long been calling for a black spot solution and we are excited to be able to deliver this in partnership with Telstra and the Kingston District Council,” he said.

“People in Keilira know the importance of connectivity, especially during crises like bushfires and to finally have this new tower will mean more reliable coverage for homes, farms and businesses.”

Member for MacKillop Nick McBride said the local community would warmly welcome the new mobile phone tower.

“For far too long the people of Keilira have had their calls for improved mobile coverage ignored,” Mr McBride said.

“Thankfully this partnership between the Marshall Liberal Government, Telstra and the Kingston District Council will deliver improved digital connectivity at last.

“A reliable mobile phone service makes a significant difference for people living and working in remote areas. This will improve safety for those in the Keilira area as well as open up new business opportunities.”

Telstra’s Acting SA Regional General Manager Michael Patterson said the site was still in the testing and commissioning phase, however it was already connecting calls and providing mobile internet for the local community.

“As with any new construction there can be problems and Telstra are sorting out a few issues with the southern facing antenna, as coverage is not currently as good as it will be. However, our techs are working on a solution and residents south of the tower should notice a big improvement by early March,” he said.

“As this area was previously a large mobile blackspot for all mobile carriers, the arrival of this new base station will not only provide full connectivity for Telstra customers, but it will also provide Triple Zero connectivity for any person on any network when they are within range. In emergency situations, this could prove a lifesaver.”

Members of the Keilira community gathered to witness the switching on of the new Telstra 4G mobile base station.
