Drenthen bowls over Mil Lel with ‘dominant performance’

SOUTH GAMBIER V MIL LEL

South Gambier’s Robert Drenthen starred for his side against Mil Lel in Round 3 of the Hoggies Wines Barber Shield Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association.

Drenthen dominated with the ball, taking six wickets for 24 runs, which included a hat-trick.

The match against Mil Lel was played under glorious sunny conditions on Saturday.

Mil Lel’s batting did not start well with the first wicket falling on just 15 runs and it became a battle for Mil Lel, however Logan Gibbs hit a solid knock of 28, William Rowland 27.

Also reaching double figures was Brad Talbot with 12, however the tail-enders did not bother the scorers too much, with the side recording a total of 84 runs off 32.1 overs.

Drenthen got his team into a great position with a stellar spell of bowling, being the stand in captain for the day made it even more special and he was supported by single wicket takers in Jackob Opie, Elwood Geary, Daniel Loupus and Ryan Kuhl.

South Gambier’s innings started losing the wicket of Loupus early with the run chase at just 17 runs with another wicket falling one ball later.

There was not any sort of partnership at all between the couple of batters, but it was Drentham who steadied the ship for South, before losing his wicket with the run chase on just 59.

It was up to Stephen Easterbrook and Elwood Geary to get the runs flowing with the lower order barely marking the score book.

Mil Lel’s bowlers battled hard, with Gibbs taking 3/16 and Jack Leishman 2/20.

South Gambier won by 42 runs.

EAST GAMBIER V NORTH SPORTSMAN

East Gambier won the toss and elected to bowl first with Liam Turley and Alex Hentschke opening the bowling against North openers Michael Johnstone and Nicolas Brown.

With the score on 55 Johnstone lost his wicket with 22 runs with Brown following on 14 just one ball later.

This brought Nick McInerney and Declan Kenny to the crease and it was Kenny the first to go having scored four runs with the score on 63, and McInerney following back to the sidelines a single ball later after scoring only two runs.

North Sportsmans were in deep trouble and needed the tail to wag to produce a respectable score.

Number seven Harry Fisher with 13 not out managed to build some pride for North, while Mathew Robinson was not out on three.

North’s total was 6/95 after 40 overs.

East Gambier’s James Sullivan was the best of the bowlers with 4/29 and single wicket-takers were Connor Little and Emerson Marks.

East opened its batting with Ben Robinson and Sullivan and with the run chase on 15 it was Robinson that was the first one to fall, followed by Sullivan out for 13.

With the score sitting at 2/26 Emmerson Marks and Dion Stratford looked to settle things down, but Stratford was unable to reproduce hisRound 1 century, finding himself out on 15, with his side sitting at 4/58.

East’s middle order looked to steady the ship as Little, Hentschke and Alex Hill pulled some runs together, building the total before the lower order fell quite cheaply and took East to 8/101 off 40 overs.

North captain Nick McInerney took 4/25 and was supported by Mathew Robinson with 2/14 and singles wickets went to Michael Johnstone and Declan Kenny.

East won by 6 runs.

PENOLA V WEST GAMBIER

Penola’s first real hit-out in three weeks left the side itching to open the shoulders.

The side was up against West, who started the season well and look to be the in-form team of the competition.

West won the toss and elected to take the field.

Jack Mullan and Lewis March opened the batting for Penola and found themselves facing Sam Willis and Kyal Chapman.

Mullan showed his intent early, driving long to all parts of the ground while March found the gaps to bring the pair to a 43-run partnership, before Mullan went for 26.

Tom Clayfield was sent in to partner with March, with the duo facing a combined 125 balls before Clayfield lost his wicket with the score on sitting on 70.

This left captain Drew Clayfield and March to steady the ship, taking the tally to 102 when Clayfield fell on 22, with March again left at the crease.

Middle-order batsmen Lachy Jones and Eli Hunter did not score, bringing in Michael Waters who stood strong, but he ran out of partners and was left not out on 10.

Bray Stephenson picked up 4/24 and Sam Willis claimed 2/13.

West set about a slow and steady run chase with Nuwan Gunawardena notching up 24 and captain Jake Blackwell scoring 50, allowing Sam Willis with 24 and Bray Stephenson also 24 to chase down the target set by Penola and cruise to a total of 8/186.

March showed his talent with the ball, taking 2/5, while single wickets went to Joshua Doyle, Eli Hunter and Waters.

West won the game by 58 runs in 40 overs.
