Drought does not stop at the farm gate – the impact extends throughout the regional economy, affecting small businesses, local jobs and community confidence.
In a bid to support local businesses in the region, Regional Development Australia Limestone Coast (RDALC) has been selected to deliver drought support through the Small Business Fundamentals Program.
An initiative of the Office for Small and Family Business and funded through the State Government’s $73m Drought Support Package, the new project offers tailored, practical help to eligible businesses.
Eligible businesses will receive one-on-one advisory and mentoring services, as well as workshops to strengthen key areas such as financial management, strategic planning, staffing, marketing, leadership, and risk management.
The program aims to boost long-term sustainability and growth across the region, especially in the face of increasing climate variability and frequency of drought.
Agricultural businesses are not the only beneficiaries, anyone facing a downturn in trade due to the tough climate conditions is encouraged to reach out.
Those who are not eligible for drought support can still access business support funded by the seven Limestone Coast councils.
This funding follows the successful delivery of the 2023 to 2025 Small Business Fundamentals program, during which RDALC supported over 500 businesses through one-on-one guidance and regional events.
RDALC chief executive Lauren Oxlade said 19 workshops were held across the Limestone Coast, attracting more than 230 participants and covering topics from cybersecurity to customer service.
“Our Small Business Fundamentals Program offers tailored advice and training to help businesses adapt to changing conditions. By strengthening core business skills, we’re helping the Limestone Coast economy remain resilient and sustainable,” she said.
As part of the new program, RDALC will host a Smarter Business Panel on September 23 at the Main Corner in Mount Gambier.
The panel will be during Small Business Week, providing practical insights to help business owners navigate financial, risk and technology challenges.
The interactive panel discussion will include advice on budgeting, managing regional risks such as drought, and integrating AI tools to improve business efficiency.
The event will start with drinks, nibbles and networking and will also feature an audience Q&A.
