Eagles bring heat in cold conditions

Penola hosted Lucindale during round seven of the Kowree Naracoorte-Tatiara season.

In the 13C conditions, there were some beautiful passages of play down finished off nicely by the goalies.

Defensive pressure caused a lot of turn over the girls used to their advantage.

Kaboom award went to Ruby Hackwill who played well in defence and attack

In Kim’s 13C the side swapping it up each quarter, taking each change in their stride.

They worked hard at putting training plays into game play, resulting in some great passages of play.

Kaboom best player was Henna Malone.

In 13A even though the girls got the win convincingly it was a pretty scrappy game of netball in the first half with lots of turn overs.

After half time the girls settled and had some nice passages of play.

Makenna Williams worked tirelessly in defence all game earning the Kaboom award and Poppy Flint provided good options and drive down the court to also earn an award.

The Division 2 girls played a ripper game and it was good to see them enjoy their netball and get a win, stringing together some great passages of play.

Toffee and Treats best player awards went to Macey O’Brien and Grace McCarthy.

It is pleasing to see the Division 3 girls growing in their netball each week.

They had some good passages of play where we linked the play together and moved the ball well.

It was good to see us driving to meet the ball and having options.

We now have a few games off and will come back fresh and ready for the second half of the season.

Best players were Maddie Ellery and Ellie Healy.

C Grade had its first round with a full side.

While a few injuries are still adding to team challenges it was good to have everyone there.

Lucy and Squish worked overtime in the defensive circle putting plenty of pressure over the ball.

Alice and Eva converted turnovers and were pushing not to give away goal attempts.

A little congestion in the middle made some passes hard to get down but a great game was had by the girls.

Best players were Leticia Gosse and Lucy Catlin.

The score was not an accurate reflection of the game for the B Grade girls who defeated a very strong Lucindale team by 24 goals.

The game was fast paced and the defensive pressure from Lucindale down court made the Penola girls work hard for every goal scored.

The game slowed down in the last quarter allowing Penola to push out the scoreline and settle back into their own playing capabilities.

Overall it was a good game and was the type of game Penola needed to prepare for the coming weeks.

With both Mundulla and Penola being undefeated this far into the comp, the next game will be one to watch.

Best players were Monique Maney and Lauren Moore.

In perfect conditions at home A Reserve came up against a strong Lucindale.

The first two quarters were hard fought as both teams struggled to gain an upper hand.

Penola was down at half time, needing to swing some changes to try and get the upper hand.

The side found a bit more space in the third and transition down court looked much better.

Penola started to put together a few goals in a row leading to a nice lead at the last break.

The final quarter was not as strong but Penola held on for another win and looks forward to enjoying the break ready to regroup and take on Mundulla.

Best players were Kim Wilson and Tara Millard.

In A Grade the Eagles came out with great intensity going up as much as seven goals in the first off of the back of some excellent defensive work.

Coach Trudy Lane from Lucindale caused some havoc in GK coming out and having a crack at some deep driving balls.

Nevertheless April Possingham was tough to beat with some sleek movement and fantastic shooting.

Lucindale’s Nikki Smart was tight in GD getting her hands on some balls and driving well out of defence as she got some turnovers that got them back within three goals at quarter time.

A change up in the defensive circle against the Roos with Chelsea Galpin going to WD and Jordy Adams into GD and what a powerhouse the defensive unit was.

Some big high hands pressure from Chelsea and Siobhan allowed for Jordy and Brooke Klemm to get their hands onto many lobs into the circle.

There was no easy feed and Lucindale’s goalies had to work really hard to find space.

In the second, the Eagles managed to convert more of their turnovers as April and Tegan had some great movement.

Siobhan Adams was again in great form gaining many turnovers through the mid-court, she drove beautifully and was pinpoint in her feeds into the goalies to earn herself best on for the day.

Although Lucindale’s press at times was difficult to get through, Jordy often had great vision down court skipping the mess, which then allowed for some strong drives onto circle edge.

Penola managed to push out the lead to 10 at the half time break.

The third quarter for Lucindale was their strongest moving Trudy to GA, Chloe Cane entering the game on at WA, Sophie Hurst moved to GD and both Trudy and Jess Bitsner converted well, winning the quarter 18-17.

However, in the last quarter the Eagles proved too strong and continued to push out their lead and finish strong winning the quarter 20-8 taking the overall margin to 21.

Best players were Siobhan Adams and April Possingham.
