Eagles come out firing

The Penola Netball Club hosted its second home game for the season, followed up by its Op Shop Bowls night.

The day also marked Brooke Klemm’s 100th game for Penola.

In 13C Kyby had strong junior numbers as well enabling the girls to play separate games.

The first years girls moved well down the court having some great passages of play.

Best player was Ane’ van der Merwe for her defensive efforts.

The second year girls showed their skills with some great switches from attacking to defence.

Best player was Addy Wilson.

The 13B girls played really well, jumping on any loose balls, having great three feet pressure over the ball and working hard on preliminary moves.

Best players were Milly Finch and Bree Wooding.

The 13A side had a tough game with illness hitting hard, however the girls rallied got on the court and gave as much as they had.

A big thank you to Emmy Copping and Sophie Pearce for jumping on the court and holding their own.

Best players were Emmy Copping and Harper Braun.

Division 3 came up against a tough opponent in Kyby.

The defence worked hard and tried to adjust their game and came up with some rebounds.

The mid court led well and the attacking circle worked hard to get front position.

Best players were Maddie Ellery and Ellie Healy.

The Division 2 team played on a slippery court in cold conditions against a very tall and skilled Kyby team.

Best players were Matilda Marlow and Amber Morton.

In C Grade Kyby never gave up which did not make the game easy.

Stella O’Brien had an excellent game in the middle, Chicago had some great drives and control around the attacking circle.

Defensively Lucy and Squish worked tirelessly and caused multiple turnovers for the win.

Best players were Chicago Smith and Stella O’Brien.

B Grade had another strong win despite most of the team being hit with some form of illness throughout the week.

No training for the week proved to be an issue as it took three quarters to really settle but the Eagles managed to find another burst of energy and really pushed out in the last quarter to win the game by 39.

Best players were Jess Blackmore and Caitlin Eason.

It was a top five battle in the A Reserve and Kyby came out firing.

Their dual tall defensive unit made it difficult for Penola in the first quarter, with frustration creeping in.

Kyby went into quarter time one up.

In the second quarter the Eagles gained composure and adjusted their game to find scoring far easier.

Tara Millard played a brilliant game in C, picking up intercepts all day.

As Hannah Klemm was sidelined with an injury, the new defensive line up of Sophie Schulz and Kim Wilson looked like they’d been playing together forever.

They had no trouble providing multiple turnovers and rebounds and ensuring the ball was safety converted to attack.

Whilst it was not the prettiest performance to watch, the Eagles dug deep all game to take the win 47-33 and retain their top of the table positioning.

Best players were Tara Millard and Sophie Schulz.

Penola drew with Kybybolite in the A Grade, as both teams came out firing and the Eagles won the first quarter 20-17.

The game was a very high scoring affair with April Possingham positioning well and converting with precision, shooting at 90%.

Tegan Lythgo also contributed many to the overall total, finding some great space in the circle.

Kaitlin Egan and Siobhan Adams let the ball go with confidence into April and Tegan, the execution was great for the Eagles.

The battle between Charlee Hodges and Brooke Klemm was once again fierce.

However, the connection between Hodges and GS Chelsea Bull was difficult to beat.

Even though intercept opportunities were rare, Penola did well in the first half to capsulise on these opportunities.

Chelsea Galpin was particularly valuable in GK picking off some pocket balls and forcing Kyby to change their attacking systems.

With an even score second quarter the Eagles remained four goals up at half time.

During the third, 100th gamer Brooke Klemm sustained some very bad cramp and had to exit the game.

This meant Chelsea Galpin came out to GD, Indi Venables to GK and Tara Millard entered the game at WD.

Mid way through the third some errors crept into Penola’s game and Kyby was quick to hit the scoreboard.

Ange Donnelley provided great support to the Kyby goalies, with Kyby being one up at the last break.

Kyby found the early momentum in the last getting up by as many as three.

However great defensive work by Chelsea and Indi got Penola back into the game with minutes to spare.

The score then seesawed and with a late goal from Chelsea Bull the game was tied.

The Eagles then moved the ball quickly to put a shot up that was sadly a couple of seconds late.

Nevertheless, the draw was a fitting result for a very even contest.

Best players were Tegan Lythgo and Kaitlin Egan.
