Eagles soar in wet conditions

In some very wet and wintry conditions the Penola Eagles had a great day on Saturday.

A special mention must for to our own Chicago Smith from the C Grade who was Penola’s Stand Like Stone Swinging with the Stars candidate.

Chicago took home the People’s Choice award for raising the most money for the incredible foundation within our community.

Kirsty’s 13C side worked well as a team and chased for every loose ball.

There were some quick passages of play down the court and the goalies shot well.

It was a great game of netball to watch.

Best player was Imogen Finch.

With a new look 13C team the girls worked well together.

The girls in defence worked hard creating many turnovers.

While the girls in attack transitioned the ball well and had some great passages of play.

Best player was Bonnie Skeer.

It was a fast paced game with some great opposition but the girls stepped up to the challenge.

Leah, Sophie, Indi and Milly worked well together in the forward line, creating some great passages of play.

Emmie, Bree and Chelsea worked tirelessly in defence, taking advantage of their front positions to gain many turnovers.

Emmie and Bree earn themselves the Wendy’s award for their turnovers and rebounds.

It was a tough game for the 13A girls being goal for goal throughout.

Our defensive pressure was consistent for the full four quarters which ultimately won us the game.

Best players went to Lani Mangarangi and Evie Tilby who got countless turnovers throughout the game.

In wet conditions the Div 2 girls played well, chasing up loose balls and backing each other up.

Naracoorte Sportspower awards went to Mia Gartner and Matilda Marlow for their efforts in defence.

Penola’s Div 1 team started off strong in the first quarter with some great movement through the mid court led by Tess Porter and Holly Flint and solid shooting by Tegan Lythgo and Ivy Wurst helped finish off a good quarter

In the second quarter Stella O’Brien and Heidi Berkin really stood up and held off Mundulla’s attack time and time again and Penola’s shooters would not be denied, working well to finish off another strong quarter.

In the third quarter Mundulla and Penola battled it out with both teams finding it difficult to score against some pretty good defence on both sides.

The last quarter saw Penola start to extend their lead before the heavens opened in the final few minutes, slowing the game down for both sides.

Best players were Stella O’Brien and Tegan Lythgo.

The C grade girls managed to stay strong and work tirelessly to get in front and secure short options and play smart netball.

It was awesome to see Lucy run the centre.

Sarah Gartner switched ends and settled in nicely to the attack line.

Best players were Lucy Catlin and Eva Manarangi.

It was another good win by the B grade girls in wet and wild conditions.

It was good to see the girls adapt to the weather and play a steady and controlled game of netball.

Teegan and Sarah both shot well all day and Sarah’s defensive pressure down court was also one to note.

Lauren was our most versatile player, providing accurate timing and feeding into our goalies down one end and created many turnovers down the other.

Ava, Monique and Jess worked brilliantly through the mid court and Caitlin and Jade provided many turnovers in the defensive end.

Best players were Ava Copping and Sarah Murphy.

The A Res came out ready to play and we adjusted to the conditions and looked after the ball for four quarters.

Resting Hannah for the first half gave Sophie and Kim a chance to work together in the defensive circle.

They worked brilliantly shutting down opportunities and picking off passes and rebounds at will.

At the other end Karly and Kasey worked tirelessly to secure good position under the ring and shot well in average conditions.

Our mid court ran all day and seamlessly transitioned from defence to attack time after time.

The team continued to build each quarter finishing with a great win in the wet.

Best players were Kasey Venables and Sophie Schultz.

The A Grade first quarter saw some scrappy netball as both teams adjusted.

April Possingham shot with confidence, however she and Tegan Lythgo found it tough at times.

The Eagles managed to capitalise on some great defensive stops and missed shots and be ahead at the first break by four.

The Eagles took the lead to seven at half time.

Sally Skeer, in only her second A Grade game for the year, stepped up and applied pressure to her opponents forcing them wide and high.

Brooke Klemm was fierce coming through beautifully with two hands to gain multiple intercepts.

The Eagles managed to get up by as much as 13 during the quarter, however Mundulla pulled the lead back to 10 at the final break.

The last quarter was the strongest for Mundulla as their defensive switch of Casey Bernhardt back to GK paid dividends.

She managed to get her hands on multiple balls and kept the Eagles to only five goals for the quarter.

A disappointing finish, however, a solid three quarters set us up for the win.

Best players were April Possingham and Sally Skeer.
