Glenelg Tigers has won its sixth SANFL premiership with a big grand final win over Sturt.
After finishing the season minor premiers Glenelg were favourites heading into the match and had no problems tearing apart Sturt to win the clubs first premiership since 2019.
Former South East footballers Matt Allen and Toby Pink who played junior football for North Gambier and Tantanoola played a crucial part in the Tigers success in 2023.
Both were named in the team of the season for the SANFL for their respective seasons, and were outstanding in the grand final.
Toby Pink was excellent at half back for the tigers with 10 disposals and five marks.
Matt Allen played on the half forward line and was excellent on the day, with 16 disposals, six marks and a goal.
Glenelg took an early lead, keeping the Blues goalless in the first quarter while booting four majors itself.
Sturt would fare better in the second quarter with two goals but Glenelg would extend its lead to 29 points.
The third quarter Glenelg would once again further extend its lead as it dominated the so called premierships quarter to have a strong 43 point lead going into the final term.
The final quarter Sturt fought back to get back in the game but the lead was too strong and Sturt were too inaccurate to get back into the match.
Matt Allen would kick Glenelg’s only goal of the final quarter to seal the match for the Tigers.
Glenelg’s Lachie Hosie would win the 2023 Jack Oatey Medal for best on ground after a terrific performance that included six goals and four marks.
Glenelg captain Max Proud also announced his retirement after the match, choosing to go out on a high.
