Saints sign new leader

Reigning premiers Millicent has appointed onballer/forward Tom Renzi as its playing coach for 2024 in the Western Border Football League.

He shared the coaching duties with Clint Gallio in 2023 but he has opted to return to his home club of Mount Burr as coach.

Renzi has collected three premiership medals in his three seasons with the Saints and played 51 games.

He was assistant coach to Gallio in 2021 and 2022.

Backing up Renzi will be Jacob Carger who will continue as assistant coach in 2024.

A club spokesperson has welcomed both appointments.

“Tom provides a seamless coaching transition for our playing group and brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion to the role,” the spokesperson said.

‘‘Jacob has captained the club through their premiership threepeat and took on the assistant coach role in 2023.

“He is looking to take on more responsibility in this role for 2024 while gaining further knowledge and experience under Tom.

“Both men are well respected by the playing group and we look forward to seeing them put their own mark on the squad in 2024.”

Renzi won a string of awards in his six years in a green-and-gold guernsey at Mount Burr in the Mid South East Football League from 2014-2019 including the 2015 club champion award, 2015 joint Walker Medallist and the 2014 Kevin Dennison Trophy as the best player in the Mid South East interleague team in its match at Tintinara.

While at Mount Burr, Renzi was also chosen for the Murray South East zone team.

Renzi twice won the prestigious Phil Muhovics Memorial Medal as the MSEFL premiership coach in 2016 and 2017 as well as the 2016 MSEFL goalkicking award with 69 majors.

Renzi became the 11th mentor of the Mozzies to achieve a flag in his first season at the helm.

He joined the late Tony Hodgens (1959) the late Ron Carlson (1960) John Roberts (1969), Keith Baker (1976) Robert Halliday (1978) David Ey (1995) Adam Wiese (2000) Darren Dean (2009), Mark Kruger (2010) and Frazer Scanlon (2015).

Renzi has also enjoyed senior premiership success in his 20 appearances with the South Gambier Football Club and is a talented soccer player.

He was appointed the coach of Casterton Sandford for the 2020 season but the WBFL competition was cancelled due to COVID travel restrictions.

During his teacher training at university in Adelaide, Renzi played 44 games with Edwardstown in the strong Southern Football League suburban competition.
