Extra resources provided to help students with extra needs

New practice guides to help teachers support children with additional needs have been rolled out across South Australian schools.

These resources, recently developed to ensure teachers have the best advice at their fingertips, were unveiled last week.

The first 16 guides include five guides specifically focused on supporting autistic students, ensuring that educators can improve their learning and wellbeing outcomes.

All schools will be provided with printed materials, which contain a QR code which links to full resources published online.

The full resources include guidance for specific additional needs, such as for learners who are vision or hearing impaired, as well as guidance for inclusion processes, such as how to modify the SACE for learners with additional needs.

They also include videos which reinforce the written information and demonstrate differentiated adjustments.

These guides, particularly those highlighting best practice for supporting autistic students, build on work being undertaken in other areas to improve outcomes for families and students.

More than $28m is being invested by the State Government to have a dedicated teacher with a focus on autism in every public primary school from 2023.

Each South Australian public school was recently advised of its allocated funding under the program – funding to release an existing teacher for one day per week or for one day per fortnight, with work now being undertaken to outline the scope of the teacher’s role.
