Farming connection

The Kongorong Farm Day will go ahead this Sunday at Kongorong Primary School from 10am-3pm on the back of what was a successful inaugural event last year.

Kongorong Farm Day committee member Tania Webb, who originally hails from New Zealand, said the farm day was inspired by Calf Club Day in her home country.

“It is just one of those special memories you have of your schooling that you did every year, you had a lamb, or a calf and you went to Calf Club Day,” she said.

“Everyone is looking forward to it and the kids are so excited.

“I just think it’s really good for kids and it teaches them a lot about themselves.

“They get home from school, go outside, play with their calf or lamb, feed their pet and grow to love their pet.”

Ms Webb said Kongorong Primary School Principal Michelle Hunt was a strong supporter of the event.

‘The kids from Kongorong Primary School are country and coastal kids and it fits exactly what the school is about because there is a lot of play-based learning and rearing an animal teaches kids so many things,” Ms Webb said.

‘It’s hands on, it’s real and it’s good for them.

“It is a really good day for anyone to come and see kids outside enjoying themselves in good, clean fun.

“We are expecting at least a couple hundred people and there will be lots of fun things to do all day.

“Thank you to all the local businesses who have sponsored the day.”

There is a scone competition open to everyone with entries required by 10am on the day for judging.

There will also be arts and crafts, a jumping castle, facepainting, a whip cracking display, stalls, the CFS and a horse and cart.

Creations made by Kongorong Primary School students will be on display from a range of materials including Lego and wood, and art forms such as paintings and photos.

The lamb competitions will start with an obstacle course using leading and calling, followed by a shearing demonstration.

At 1pm there will be a Farmers Challenge which includes a gum boot throw and sack race and is open to anyone who wants to get involved.

The calves will kick off at 1.30pm and for all the animal lovers, there will be a baby joey and a petting zoo which will include a lizard and stingray.

Entry is $10 for adults with all kids under 18 free.
