Footy legend beached

Avideo has gone viral of a recent mishap on the back beaches of Beachport involving AFL legend Gavin Wanganeen.

The Brownlow Medallist and dual premiership player with Essendon and Port Adelaide Power shared the footage to his social media account and it has since attracted the attention of television news bulletins and capital city newspapers.

He was driving a 4WD vehicle in that area and accompanied by a friend in a second like vehicle when both became trapped in sand.

The footage shows the Mount Gambier-born champion talking to a mobile phone video camera when his vehicle was suddenly struck by large waves.

Heavy vehicles were then summoned to tow both trapped vehicles from the beach.

No-one was injured as a result of the mishap.

The AFL legend has thanked the Beachport community members who rendered assistance.

Speaking with the capital city media, Mr Wanganeen said he and the other driver were caught unawares by the sudden change in conditions.

“It was a bit worrying as there was a fast sea coming towards us,” Mr Wanganeen told reporters.

“There were big seas and a lot of movement and the waves suddenly moved quite fast.

“I’d really advise anyone with not much experience on beach driving to take it easy.

“Even the most experienced people can get into a bit of trouble suddenly.”
