The SANFL will reconvene its South East Working Party in Mount Gambier tonight to consider other options to restructure competitions in this region.

SANFL Head of Country Football Shawn Ford had signalled such a meeting would be called following the August 31 vote by 200 members of the Penola Football Netball Club which blocked a return to the Western Border in 2024.

It followed knockbacks by the Portland and the Hamilton Kangaroos clubs to re-join a re-badged Western Border next season.

Mr Ford has declined to state what further options will be considered.

Meanwhile, there was strong support for the Mid South East to maintain the status quo when its footballers and netballers attended the annual Mail Medal presentation at the Millicent War Memorial Civic and Arts Centre on Sunday.

The league was formed in 1936 and has had just one change in composition in almost 60 years.

Numerous award recipients urged statewide administrators to leave the Mid SE in its present structure.

The Mid South East Netball Association executive committee awarded life membership to its long-serving president Sara Gray and their citation acknowledged her passionate efforts to maintain the competition.

In his address to the Mail Medal function, Mid South East Football League president Peter Mitchell said he was aware that changes were still being mooted.

However, Mr Mitchell said he wanted the current football and netball structures to be retained.

He said Mid SE clubs were coming to him and seeking news about what will happen.

“I am telling them it is business as usual,” Mr Mitchell said.
