Game on for women

It was a historic weekend for Limestone Coast football when the first ever junior girls competition became a reality at Blue Lake Sports Park on Sunday.

Less than half a decade ago there were no competitive options for females looking to play football, but today adults and rising stars can compete in the seniors, while the youngsters can get a feel for Australia’s game in the new juniors comp.

Once South Gambier’s Bailey Broome won the first ever ruck contest over Kongorong’s Becky Duivenvoorde, there was a sense something special had begun.

Only one minute had ticked over on the scoreboard before Thalia Von Stanke kicked the maiden major and suddenly the Hawks and the competition were away.

Kongorong may always be known as the first team to win a game of juniors girls football, but the day will more fondly be remembered for the start of a new era and another giant leap forward for the game.
