Guilty
verdict in bashing case

AMount Gambier man has been found guilty of bashing his partner to death almost three years ago.

Bradley Wayne Trussell, 30, was on Friday found guilty in the Supreme Court of bashing 25-year-old Eden Kennett, also from Mount Gambier, to death in December 2018.

Ms Kennett was initially taken to Mount Gambier Hospital before being airlifted to Royal Adelaide Hospital, but died the next day after being declared brain-dead.

Trussell had pleaded guilty to Ms Kennett’s manslaughter but not guilty to her murder and was ordered to stand trial.

During his trial the court heard Trussell had inflicted multiple blows to Ms Kennett’s head and body, including some using a pole.

During the trial Justice Anne Bampton said she rejected the suggestion Trussell had acted in self-defence.

“I cannot exclude the possibility that Mr Trussell and Ms Kennett engaged in altercations which involved mutual physical violence,” Justice Bampton said.

“Mr Trussell agreed that during their fights and struggles he would get the better of Ms Kennett. He also agreed that he was physically stronger than her.

“Having regard to the number of injuries sustained by Ms Kennett … the application of moderate force to lacerate the liver, the application of severe force to fracture the ribs and the use of a rod-like implement, I am satisfied that Ms Kennett was subjected to violent blunt force trauma inflicted by Mr Trussell.”

The matter will return to court in November.
