Year 11 student Isabelle Lamb has soared to new heights winning the prestigious Tenison Woods College Flyers Award.
The award was presented at the Remembrance Day Ceremony at Tenison Wood’s College by Mount Gambier RSL President Bob Sandow.
The Flyers Award honours four Marist Brothers Agricultural College old scholars and pilots – Anthony Casadio, John Friedricks, Reginald Van Leuven and Errol Kavanagh.
“Tenison Woods College/Marist Brothers Agricultural College gave them their wings, and the Defence Force taught them to fly,” Mr Sandow said.
“The scholarship values the ideals of Tenison Woods College aiming to reward a student who has had a go, not the most academic.”
Mr Sandow said the award honours the sacrifice and service of those men and women who served their country in a variety of military capacities.
“The award seeks to acknowledge a senior school student who has demonstrated their ability to go beyond what is generally expected of them, put others before themselves and has a strong sense of comradeship,” he said.
“Their service to the college community and beyond is an honour to themselves, their families and the college.
“My wife and I fund the award on behalf of the Mount Gambier Community RSL and will continue to do so as long as we can.”
Miss Lamb received this year’s Flyers award for being positive, persistent and hard-working.
She joins three other Tenison Woods College Flyers Award Winners – Patrick McCourt, Mitchell Watt and inaugural award winner Taylor Fatchen.
She was selected to undertake the Royal Australian Air Force Aviation Program which was a four-day aviation program at the Edinburgh base in Adelaide.
The program provides aspiring women with an overview of life in the air force, particularly in aviation and engineering roles.
With a total of 43 flying hours completed (31 with an instructor and 12 solo), Miss Lamb has already gained her passenger carrying endorsement which allows her to take passengers.
Through her involvement in flying, she has grown in her leadership and problem-solving skills and passion for flying and she hopes to become a commercial pilot when she completes school.
“I had absolutely no idea that I was winning this award, I was really shocked!” Miss Lamb said.
“I felt proud to be standing on the shoulders on the four previous flyers and representing their values and passion for flying.
“Next year I will be completing Year 12 at Tenison Woods College, with plans the following year to head away to complete my Commercial Pilot Theory, I hope to then gain employment as a charter pilot.”
