Hot conditions bring out sizzling scores

Saturday brought the first burst of uncomfortably hot conditions for the season, but it was not just the weather that was hot with a number of players also sizzling.

None more so than Trevor Callis who took out the overall win in the Blue Lake Golf Club Stableford competition with 41 points.

Callis has shown plenty of ability over recent months and finally brought his complete game to the course with splits of 39 and 37, built around five opening pars on the front nine.

Scoring in the main grade was also hot with Zeick Dalton (6) registering three birdies on his way to 40 points, falling just short of Callis.

Dalton started strongly and made short work of the par 5 third hole with a birdie and was going along nicely until he tried to cut the corner of the innocuous ninth.

He bounced back from his only pick up with birdies on holes 12 and 18 for a neat 35 off the stick.

A count-back was needed to decide second and third after Ben Gordon and Anthony Williams tied on 38 points.

Gordon (11) had a crazy day by starting with five points after the first five holes including a birdie on the second. Thanks to another birdie on the ninth, he salvaged 16 points on the front before adding a more respectable 22 on the back.

Williams (1) had the perfect round going, parring every hole on the front nine except for the ninth on which he had a birdie.

Things were going along as planned with regulation pars until he found tree trouble on the 14th.

An eagle on the 17th made up for the damage, but eventually hurt his chances in the count-back chase.

B Grade winner Colin Stratford would have been confident of securing the win after returning to the clubhouse with 40 points.

Normally enough to secure a win, Stratford (17) had an anxious wait after Kevin Stark also came in with 40.

Luckily for Stratford he did all his scoring on the back nine.

After a rough start with just 16 points “Stratty” found his touch with six pars over the back nine.

Stark (14) chased hard, but was never going to catch such a strong score of Stratford’s.

Filling third prize was popular club person David Johnston who returned to form with 39 points.

Johnston (18) had a bit of a rough patch through the middle part of his round, but then showed what he is capable of with a par, par, birdie, par finish.

Surprisingly in a game where the higher handicap players normally dominate, scores in C Grade were relatively low except for winner Brendan Whelan (27) with 38 points.

Splits of 46 and 49 saw the Warrnambool visitor finish five points in front of runner-up Scott Montgomery (24) and Gavin Sparrow (29) who both tied on 33 points.

Matt Jennings and Williams both eagled the 17th hole.

The Stratford family enjoyed double celebrations on Saturday night after Helen also claimed the outright win in the women’s Stableford competition.

A string of pars on the front nine helped Stratford (23) to a remarkable 24 points, while a more subdued inward nine saw her add another 17.

She scored on every hole to finish well clear of Fiona Punton and Bev Pascoe.

An almost capacity field took advantage of the festive season in the mid-week Par competition.

Jamal Jakubenko (11) and Trevor Gartside (21) left the rest of the field behind and tied for the best score of the day with +5’s apiece.

Jakubenko luckily did all his scoring on the back nine to take the count-back win, while Gartside endured a more up-and-down round.

David Lamont finished third with +3 after some consistent golf to record.
