Illegal firewood blitz

Local police have been cracking down on illegal wood harvesting in the region.

Operation Red Gum has been conducted in the Limestone Coast Local Service Area focusing on the illegal harvesting, transport and sale of red gum firewood.

In April 2023, police met with key stakeholders in the forestry industry as well as PIRSA, National Parks and the Wattle Range Council representatives.

During this meeting concerns were raised regarding the large-scale removal of red gum trees from National Parks and heritage areas within the pine plantations.

Several joint operations were conducted between SAPOL and PIRSA during the operation with four people arrested and seven people reported for theft of firewood.

Police issued 14 expiation notices relating to the unsafe transportation of wood in trailers.

Limestone Coast police have thanked members of the public who have been able to assist them during Operation Red Gum.

Anyone who sees people acting suspiciously near forest or park areas to contact the Police Assistance Line immediately on 131 444.
