Illegal firewood focus

Police have recently arrested two Millicent men and charged them with the theft of redgum
wood.

It will be alleged the pair had used stolen chainsaws to cut down standing timber on a roadside at Bray.

The arrests had been made by police from Beachport and Robe.

Meanwhile, police across the South East region are continuing with their special annual operation known as “Operation Redgum” in a bid to counter the theft of timber for firewood.

Officer-in-charge of Millicent police Senior Sergeant First Class Rick Errington said he suspects there are many local sales of firewood to the public where it has been illegally obtained.

According to Sgt Errington, there were examples where wood thieves were setting up lighting plants in order to go out and steal the wood at night.
