Impressive pup tops auction

Amore-than-two-decades’ commitment to Casterton’s annual Premier Working Dog Auction saw yet another record auction for Paul McPhail’s Beloka Kelpies bloodline.

Hailing from Welshpool in Gippsland, Beloka Kelpies is an annual feature in the auction catalogue with not only Mr McPhail, but vendors from across the state and the country, offering offspring from the stud’s impeccable breeding.

This year was no different and there was a cheer and visible astonishment from the crowd when, at Lot 62 and just four months old, Beloka Sally blew the stud’s previous auction record for a pup out of the water, the hammer falling on an $11,000 bid.

The red and tan female out of Beloka Keeper and sired by top yard dog, Beloka Roy V, made her presence known in the yards during the morning’s demonstrations, but was equally happy to sit and wait quietly for the next job, unaware of the excitement around her as she went under the hammer.

“I had her as a 12-week-old pup at home, we were filming and I said I’m letting these outside into the paddock and she just handled (the stock) at 12 weeks,” Mr McPhail said after Sunday’s auction.

“And today in the demonstrations, those sheep were really not educated and she just did it beautifully.”
