Mount Gambier’s airport and saleyards have been highlighted as a priority for discussion at a national event next month.

Grant District Council chief executive Darryl Whicker will be attending at the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) National General Assembly.

It is at this event he intends to advocate for federal funding for both the Mount Gambier Regional Airport and the Mount Gambier and District Saleyards.

The annual event provides a unique opportunity for local government to engage directly with the federal government.

Economic growth relating to tourism and development opportunities, health and wellbeing of residents as well as improved regional communication will also be topics of discussion Mr Whicker intends to discuss.

Councillor Megan Dukalskis will also be attending the four-day event being held in Canberra.

ALGA president Linda Scott said the event was an opportunity for Australia’s 537 councils to consider current and emerging issues and opportunities, and advocate on important issues for communities.

“Council’s input and guidance adds immeasurably to our effectiveness in progressing shared national objectives,” she said.
