Inner city traffic concerns addressed

Safety concerns at an intersection in the city has prompted Mount Gambier City Council to install a no parking zone.

The safety concerns at the intersection of Jardine Street and Hedley Street have been raised by a resident from Jardine Street.

The no parking zone will apply at all times on the western side of Hedley Street.

City growth general manager Tim Coote tabled a report in regards to the matter at council’s December general meeting.

He said a meeting was held on site with the resident to discuss their concerns.

Council had also written to other nearby residents.

“Council wrote to the residents along the effected portion of Hedley Street seeking their views on the removal of carparking on the western side with a report to be brought back to council,” Mr Coote said.

Mr Coote reported one resident responded in favour of the No Parking Area.

“No other response was received from 15 letters to residents,” he said.

Following the onsite meeting and results from the residential letter drop, Mr Coote said it had been determined that a no parking zone would be the best outcome.

Attached to the report was Mr Coote’s Traffic Impact Statement and a copy of the letter to residents from City Council operations and engineering manager Abdullah Mahmud.

Mr Coote also provided a copy of an aerial map highlighting the proposed no parking zone.

The recommendation was moved by Councillor Max Bruins, seconded by Cr Sonya Mezinec and carried.
