Millicent resident and American citizen Lucy Thompson is taking a keen interest in the outcome of the American presidential election which will be decided this week.

She is hopeful that Democrat challenger Joe Biden will claim the White House at the expense of the incumbent Republican President Donald Trump.

Ms Thompson said President Trump has a background in business and not politics.

“He does not have the political negotiating skills to govern the country,” Ms Thompson said.

She has lodged presidential postal votes in about 10 or 12 elections since making her home in Australia in 1965.

However, she did not vote in 2020, “You have to lodge an application to vote with the American consulate in Melbourne.

“With all the matters relating to COVID-19, it was one of those things that did not get done.”

Her last presidential vote was lodged through the state of California in 2016 when she backed Democrat Hilary Clinton ahead of President Trump.

With a background as a nurse educator, Ms Thompson hails from the state of Massachusetts.

The famous Kennedy political clan lived in her area and she would occasionally see them at the same public events.

Ms Thompson has lived in Millicent since 1967 after meeting and marrying local businessman Peter Thompson (now deceased) and raising a family of twin girls and one boy.

She has a high profile in Millicent through her involvement with the South East Family History Group, Millicent Craft Group and St Anthony’s School.
