Internet upgrade to reach city homes

Eligible Mount Gambier premises are on the map to benefit from high-speed NBN upgrades.

The government and NBN recently announced plans to invest an additional $2.4b to roll out more fibre to communities across Australia.

An NBN spokesperson said the investment will enable an additional 1.5 million premises currently served by Fibre to the Node (FTTN) to upgrade to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) by the end of 2025.

Mount Gambier is included in the selection of towns and suburbs identified for the 1.5 million premises and 120,000 upgrades will take place across South Australia.

FTTP helps deliver faster broadband speeds, increased reliability, is more energy efficient and supports the provision of additional data capacity across the NBN network.

Customers eligible for an upgrade will be able to place an order via a participating retailer for a plan based on an eligible wholesale speed tier, such as NBN’s three highest residential speed tiers NBN Home Fast, NBN Home Superfast and NBN Home Ultrafast (FTTP).

The NBN spokesperson said the design and construction work will take approximately 12 to 18 months, so they are targeting the end of 2025 for customers living and working in these premises to be “ready for order”.

Customers can visit www.nbn.com.au/fttpupgrade to find out if their premises may be eligible to upgrade from FTTN to FTTP and to register for updates.

The NBN spokesperson said residents outside the fixed line footprint may be part of the thousands of homes and businesses across Australia that will benefit from the NBN Fixed Wireless and Satellite Upgrade Program, announced in March.

The program aims to enhance NBN fixed wireless coverage, expand the reach of the existing fixed wireless footprint by at least 50% and enable two new wholesale high-speed fixed wireless plans – 100 Mbps and 250 Mbps (pending consultation).

The spokesperson said planning on the fixed wireless upgrade program was under way and NBN hoped to obtain further details, such as locations included in the program, in the coming months.
