Junior season served

The last round of the inaugural Southern Ports Tennis Association Junior season was played in damp conditions.

Unfortunately for Kingston and Naracoorte/Padthaway Yellow, the rain lingered and the match could not even get started. The rest of the matches were able to commence on wet courts after a short rain delay.

Millicent hosted Naracoorte/Padthaway Blue, with the score lines pretty one-sided with a decisive 46 games to 14 win to Nar/Pad Blue.

The Millicent team as always showed their determination.

The match of the day was Digby McGregor and Danny Ahmeda a 6-1 win to Digby, but some great points and excellent shots were played by both boys.

The two Lucindale teams were playing for local bragging rights, with their positions secure for the grand final next week, it was interesting to see just how close these teams are.

The scoreline was close in all but one match, making for some great tennis for the spectators.

It was a close finish, Koalas just pipping the Roos 45 to 44, a timely reminder before the rand final that every single game is so important.

All players are to be commended for calling the scores and playing in the spirit of the game.

Naracoorte Red and Naracoorte White were playing for a Division 1 placing in next week’s grand final so they were all keen to get on the courts.

In the bottom doubles, Angus Redding and Thomas Malone had a lucky win in a tie-break after giving up a considerable lead.

In the singles Mia McCarthy and Toby Drew played a great set, Mia getting up 6-4, while Charlie dominated with a 6-0 win continuing his successful singles season.

Max and Alice had some tight games in their hard-hitting match, Max taking the win 6-2.

White won the day 46 to 29 and the right to take on the top placed Kingston in next Saturday’s grand final.

The association is looking forward to a fantastic grand final Day at Lucindale on Saturday, with the SPTA Juniors the curtain raiser for the seniors in the afternoon. It will definitely be the place to be.

We are expecting some high-level junior tennis with some great match ups to watch.

Good luck to Kingston and Naracoorte White in the Division 1, playing for the newly created Greenways Tennis Club Junior Division 1 shield – what an honour that will be to be the first team engraved on this shield.

Division 2 will be the Lucindale Koalas versus Naracoorte Red.

The Lucindale Roos will be playing the Naracoorte Padthaway Blue team.

Play starts from 9am with presentations expected approximately 11am before the seniors get under way at 12.30pm.
