Juniors throw down challenge

Junior members of Mount Gambier Disc Golf have featured heavily in the 2021 National Tour with Jessica and Austin Holman both taking division honours for Junior Girls and Boys divisions.

The titles help reinforce the improvement of the players which has seen their scores soar to national reckoning.

The Holman siblings recently joined MGDG president Mat Weyers in delivering a basket to the Treehouse Adventure Centre in the Blue Lake City in what the club hopes to expose the wider community to the ever-growing sport.

Other strong tour results by MGDG members have been Amy Weyers and Michelle Schulz who placed second and third respectively in the female novice division.

Gareth Morgan would go on to claim the men’s Advanced title and Alex Costales secured second in the men’s intermediate division.

Jess and Austin Holman will now set their sights to the National Championships which is set to be played out this weekend at the Inverleigh golf club, located just outside of Geelong.

The course is going to be quite challenging for players and has recently been re-designed for the tournament which will be the first national title contested since the Highly successful 2019 championship held at the Crater Lakes Disc Golf Park.

When the event arrived at Mount Gambier it attracted a record number of players (187) across 14 divisions.

Other local competitors who are eager to make their mark on the event include Ryan Nicholson, Michelle Schulz, Kate Eldridge, Damien Holman, Mick Wilson and Hayden McPherson.

The latter is hoping to go one better than his previous second place in 2019.
