Kalangadoo end of an era

Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church at Kalangadoo is closing and its final Mass will be held at 2pm on August 18.

Afternoon tea will follow at the Riddoch Memorial Institute at Kalangadoo

Regular services have not been held at the stone church for several years.

It is a part of the Parish of Penola and the Archdiocese of Adelaide.

The foundation stone was laid by Dean Michael Ryan of Mount Gambier in 1904.

A special train was organised to bring Mount Gambier visitors to the occasion.

St Joseph’s was ready for worship the following year and was blessed and dedicated on January 22, 1905.

Over the past 40 years, Catholic churches have also closed at Nangwarry, Greenways, Kongorong, Glencoe, Lucindale and Tantanoola.

Other mainstream churches have also closed at the region’s smaller towns.

The sole church remaining at Kalangadoo will be St Alban’s Anglican Church.

Within the past 20 years, the Kalangadoo Uniting Church and hall were sold and is now the venue for a weekly community market.

The former St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church was renovated into upmarket accommodation in 2017.
