Lakers lift in Riverland

The Mount Gambier Lakers arrived and conquered at the Riverland Basketball Tournament with almost all six representative teams taking home silverware last weekend.

Three Mount Gambier outfits were crowned as champions, while the only team not to reach a Grand Final was the Under 14 Boys Division 2, but they still impressed reaching the semi-finals.

Across 16 grades travelling teams from all over South Australia descended on the Riverland with games played across the region from Berri to Renmark, but few made a bigger impact than the Lakers.

The Lakers fielded a team in the Under 18 Men grade and pushed it with the best.

Mount Gambier almost went through the group stage unscathed with a loss to the home side the only blemish.

A rematch with the Riverland Raiders awaited in the decider and the hosts proved too good once again by 14 points.

Mackye Baron and James Allen were the top performers.

The Under 14 Boys Division 1 team was crowned champions, while the Division 2 team looked on course to replicate the higher grade with Taj Brumby and Henry Pedler performing, but their efforts were not enough to topple the Barossa Settlers.

The Lakers’ Under 16 boys gave a good account of themselves with the Division 1 and 2 teams being runners-up and champions respectively.

The Division 1 team was a consistent force with wins over Bordertown and Eastern Hills highlights, while nerves were sky high during a 33-all draw against Riverland.

Mount Gambier eventually recovered and hoped to replicate its Division 2 title in the top grade.

Brumby and Riley Ellis have it a crack, but the Barossa Settlers proved too good.

No one was going to stop the Lakers from taking home the Under 16 Girls Division 2 trophy.

The youngsters were on fire winning every game with only Bordertown creating any cause for concern.

Ava Collins played in a league of her own all tournament scoring double the amount of points of her next best team mate Elodie Adam.

A strong team performance helped the Lakers secure the victory by 23 points.
