AFL ‘holy grails’ on show in region

AFL fans across the South East have had the chance this week to lay their eyes on some of the most prestigious trophies in Aussie Rules football.

The 2024 AFL and AFLW premiership cups, the perpetual SANFL Thomas Seymour Hill Trophy and the SANFLW premiership cup visited six schools yesterday and a further five stops are scheduled for today.

As well as the school visits, there will be a coaching clinic at Mount Gambier’s Frew Park this afternoon, while retired AFLW star Erin Phillips will address a community engagement session at the Riddoch Arts Centre in the Blue Lake city tonight.

The travelling trophies are part of the AFL and SANFL’s Gather Round Community Footy Roadshow.

It is approaching its climax after almost three weeks of criss-crossing South Australia.

The Roadshow will have travelled to more than 30 regional towns and covered more than 4000km by the time it makes its final stop in Keith on Tuesday.

Other features are women and girls football education sessions, coach education sessions, regional umpire recruitment and development and a roll out of the Tackle your Feelings mental health training program for clubs.

SANFL participation manager Jarrod Brennan is on the Roadshow and told The SE Voice there had been a positive reception wherever they went.

“We will be having a Roadshow for every year that we have a Gather Round in SA and we will only be taking it to country areas,” he said.
