Lobster price rise expected

Lobster prices along the South East coast are set to increase ahead of the Chinese New Year celebrations next month.

As more than 95% of the State’s lobster catch is exported to Asian countries, the 170 licence holders are set to do quite well out of the international celebrations to mark the start of the Year of the Tiger on Tuesday, February 1.

The beach price dipped by $10 per kilogram last week with industry insiders stating this was a probable response to a temporary fortnight-long cessation of flights to Hong Kong.

Mainland China banned the lucrative imports of Australian lobsters in 2020 but there are widespread rumours the local fish are still entering this country via the black market.

Retailers in South Australia are currently charging their customers $75 per kilogram.
