Grant District Council is calling for the community to help recognise the unsung heroes within the district by nominating them for a 2024 Citizen of the Year Award.

The Citizen of the Year Awards are designed to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of those who dedicate their time to making our district a better place.

Both individuals and organisations are eligible for the awards with outstanding dedication in community service areas such as education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sport, arts, the environment or any other area that contributes to the advancement and wellbeing of the community.

Mayor Kylie Boston said the Citizen of the Year Awards were an opportunity to say thank you to the district’s quiet achievers.

“It is important that individuals and groups are celebrated for their valued commitment as our community would not be as strong and vibrant as it is without their efforts,” Mayor Boston said.

“If you know an individual, organisation, group or event that has made a meaningful contribution in our community, I encourage you to show your appreciation by nominating them for a Citizen of the Year Award.”

This year’s Citizen of the Year Award recipient Sheryl Tiegesser said she was humbled to have received such an honour.

“To be nominated and awarded Citizen of the Year was an awesome experience and one I will always be honoured by.

So if you know of someone who you believe could be the next Citizen of the Year, please nominate them for this fantastic award and recognition,” she said.

Award nominees and winners will be celebrated and presented with certificates at a private Australia Day Citizen of the Year Awards event on January 26, 2024.

Nominations close on November 17 and submissions can be made online via citizenoftheyear.com.au or directed to Grant District Council at 324 Commercial Street West / PO Box 724, Mount Gambier SA 5290 or emailed to info@dcgrant.sa.gov.au.

Nominations are open for the following categories:

• Young Citizen of the Year (persons between 16 and 30 years of age on 26 January 2024);

• Citizen of the Year (persons 30 years of age or older on 26 January 2024);
