LOCAL WANNON DRAFT SUCCESS

LOCAL riders have once again made their presence felt on the district campdraft circuit, capping-off another successful weekend for the Wannon River Campdraft team.

Held on the Mercer property at the Wannon, this year more than 570 entries were made over eight events and it was once again the young brigade that dominated the local campaign.

Ruby James continued her success from the Macarthur draft, taking the win in the Junior by 20 points on the James-bred Thistlehill Breeze and third with Thistlehill Flight.

She was joined in the ribbons by Ed Whinney on Swift in fourth place, Matilda Mercer on Black Boots in fifth and George Whinney on Reggie in sixth place.

The Juvenile event was also a ‘who’s-who’ of locals, with Harry Mercer taking both the win and second place on Frank and Gilbert, respectively – just one point separating the result.

Glenelg Pony Club’s Jimmy Dyer and Smarty followed the lead, just five points behind.

Hawkesdale’s Darcy Dell and Siena rounded-out the top six, while Melville Forest’s Kaylah Lyons and Mobile Starline were just outside the ribbons, in seventh.

In the Maiden A first round, Darcy Dell and Siena finished on top of the table with a complete run and outstanding score of 89, tied with Graeme Kempe and Bonnie.

Thistlehill Flight returned to the camp, this time with Ian James aboard and finished a tidy run of 86 points in third.

Sticky stock in the final however, saw just three outside scores recorded, both Dell and Kempe unable to add to their first round scores.

James and T. Flight started their final run with a handy camp score of 22 and made tidy work of the arena to finish with an 88 and the win.

On his home ground, Andrew Mercer took out the Maiden B, with Gilbert also returning to the arena.

Starting with a camp score of 22, total 87 in the first round, the pair missed the gate in the final, but recorded one of just two outside scores to take the win by 20 points over Cass Young on Tarranlea Classic Rock.

Tiffany Dell and Sugar Cat took third place.
