South Australians are being encouraged to have their say on the future of their communities as councils start consulting on their draft Annual Business Plans and Budgets for the 2025-26 financial year.
While dates will vary between councils, this process is an opportunity for all residents to provide feedback on proposed local projects, services and infrastructure investments to be delivered in their area.
LGA South Australia chief executive Clinton Jury said community input plays a vital role in shaping council decisions.
“Engaging with communities is a key part of how councils operate across South Australia,” Mr Jury said.
“Unlike other levels of government, residents can have direct input into how their rates revenue is invested – whether that’s in parks and reserves, playgrounds, libraries, community programs or essential infrastructure.
“Everyone can have their say through their local council’s business planning process and provide feedback online, in writing or in person at council meetings.”
Mr Jury said councils must balance significant investments in infrastructure with the delivery of essential services like waste collection, road and footpath upgrades, and park maintenance when it comes to finalising their budgets.
“Councils are committed to making these decisions in a transparent and accountable way, so residents can be confident their views will be considered,” Mr Jury said.
“It’s through consultation with residents and local businesses that councils can ensure their plans reflect what communities value most.
“Preparing a budget often means making tough choices and councils want their communities to be part of the process – I encourage everyone to have their say by participating in the consultation and giving their feedback.”
Councils will adopt their Annual Business Plans and Budgets between June 1 and August 15, 2025, and under the Local Government Act 1999 must consult their communities before finalising rates for the 2025-26 financial year.
For residents experiencing financial hardship, councils offer a range of support options – including flexible payments or deferment of rates – and residents are encouraged to reach out directly to learn more about what assistance is available.
