Memorial challenge

Cyclists will push their limits this weekend as they compete in the Bailey Memorial cycling race.

The 50km Bailey Memorial will be held on Sunday (September 26), starting on the corner of Mount Salt Road and Bay Road.

Juniors will have a 9am start, with the senior riders scheduled for a 9.30am start.

The Bailey is one of Australia’s oldest cycling races and is up there with the Alex Roberts 100, with the original trophy still in circulation.

The event was named after Allan Bailey, who came from the era of wooden wheels and woollen jerseys, but he remains of one Mount Gambier’s greatest cyclists.

The Bailey Memorial has been continuously run every season since its inception in 1932, except for during COVID.

The race is regarded as the hardest club memorial to win.
