Millicent flexes WB muscles

A Reserve – Millicent 60 d West Gambier 43


Millicent claimed the A Reserve premiership with a 17 goal win against West Gambier.

From the first whistle the Saints took control with turnovers from defenders Alice Pratt and Jo Wilson while spearhead goal shooter Annelise Janssen was on fire.

But the Roos settled through Claire Hunter and clawed the deficit down to three goals by quarter time.

Janssen was unstoppable under the post despite while at the other end defenders Jo Wilson and Alice Pratt worked tirelessly to contain West’s shooting duo Hunter and Jasmine Davey.

West struggled to penetrate Millicent’s defence and the Saints secured the premiership with Janssen being named best on court.


B Grade – Millicent 43 d North Gambier 35


They call the third quarter the premiership quarter and that was never truer in the B Grade decider between North Gambier and Millicent.

The Saints won that quarter by nine goals and in the end that was the game with all the other quarters tightly contested.

The Tigers led by one at the first change as association best and fairest Bri Fuller dominated with her hard running and accurate finishing.

and were it not for some scrapping to win back the ball by Saints wing defender Layla Baker, the scoreline might not have been as close.

The second quarter was also an arm wrestle with Kodi Lucas and Krystal Coghlan getting some important touches for Millicent.

It was all about opportunity in the third quarter and the Saints translated their defensive dominance to scoreboard pressure with Jemma Hayward netting nine from 14.

The stats told the story with North generating nine scoring shots to Millicent’s 24 which ensured the latter recorded an eight goal victory.


C Grade – East Gambier 42 d South Gambier 38

It was always going to be a tight battle and the first quarter set the scene for a tense arm wrestle as East Gambier worked its way to a two goal lead courtesy of accurate finishing from Katie Gaffney and Megan Wilson.

Despite South shooter Ella Egan starting in dominant fashion, the defensive efforts of Eryn Caruso held the Demons at bay.

South upped the defensive pressure in the second quarter by three-quarter time had worked its way back to only a one goal deficit.

In a frenetic final quarter, Jess McGregor started to be a real influence at the Demons’ defensive end, but East rallied and through accurate finishing of Jordan Davis converting eight straight, secured a four goal victory.


17 and Under – Millicent 57 d South Gambier 51


The 17 and Under grand final was expected to be a tense goal for goal battle and that is exactly how it panned out but in the end, Millicent held the slight edge all day and took the premiership.

South started strongly with centre Ellie Bouchier, Milla Walmsley and Alyssa Duncan feeding the ball accurately to Lara Munro, who netted 13 from 16 to throw down a challenge.

But the Saints responded through the hard running of Ella Easterby and Saige Gibson in what became a goal for goal contest.

Saints defenders Portia McRae and Lauren VanEeden made life tough for the Demons goalers but hard running from Bouchier and Chelsea Ryan ensured their team was well in contention.

Lillie Paul, who entered the game at centre had an influence with her hard running, while the precise feeding of Daisy Tunkin was also a factor.

Dunn and Clayton worked overtime to make life tough for Denton and Janssen but in the end, a few errors amid the physical pressure of McRae and VanEeden ensured the Saints held on to claim the premiership.


15 and Under A – Millicent 43 d North Gambier 39

In the match of the day the Millicent Saints won the 15 and Under A premiership in overtime.

In what was a highly skilled contest the game was drawn at full time with 35 goals apiece.

The Saints started the match well with Piper Paul controlling the attack like for the Saints and Edie Easterby gaining early intercepts, while Cara Nulty and Poppy Venn were working hard for their respective midcourts.

Edie Easterby denied Macey Griffith easy access to the post to help the Saints gain an early lead.

The third quarter was tight with both teams making errors.

North’s wing defence Jayme Young made it tough for Paul as she matched her speed while Nulty got some important touches around the circle.

The last quarter went goal for goal early and with Griffith finding space in attack to help North bridge the gap, but Paul continued to control the attack line for the Saints.

In the dying minutes Millicent had a chance to score but a missed penalty meant overtime was required.

Saints brought Mia Gysbers back onto the court which helped them to score first.

As Mattie Fauchelle shut down access to Adams and best on court Molly Cushion did not miss, Millicent took a memorable four-goal win.


15 and Under B – North Gambier 32 d East Gambier 24

Starting the match as underdogs, East Gambier knew it had to fight against North Gambier and did that.

The defensive pressure from North was outstanding but East, through the hard running of Lily McIntosh, continued to battle hard.

But with Tora Jones running hard in centre and Megan Wells presenting under the post the Tigers started to jump clear.

The Bulldogs did fight back in the final quarter but some long range bombs from Milly Allen ensured North remained in control.


13 and Under A – Millicent 57 d West Gambier 20

Millicent started well scoring the first three goals before West replied through Lila Pearson.

The Saints pressure at the centre pass was tight with Lucy Crowe and Ash Dean gaining vital touches to gain an early lead.

With Kalani Dunn and Dean shooting accurately and Emily Denton and Jeda Hibberd restricting the West goalies, the Saints started to march clear.

Libby Buck got vital touches and Lila Pearson shot accurately, but they could not stop Millicent from running out 32-goal winners.


13 and Under B – Casterton Sandford 25 d Millicent 14

Millicent and Casterton Sandford faced off in a tense goal for goal battle.

It was all about defence as Ylana Grigg and Chloe Kurzman limited the amount of ball for the Saints goalers but Amarlie Thomson still kept her team in touch.

The strong shooting of Phoebe Rhook eventually helped the Cats gain a three goal lead at the final change.

In the frenetic final quarter, the passionate Cats crowd started to lift the players on court and with Renee Gorman and Rhook dominating in the shooting circle to power to an 11 goal victory.
