Millicent sculpture to be installed

The installation of a super-size sculpted hand at a Millicent park is expected within a few weeks.

Wattle Range Council has used a Federal Government grant to commission the sculpture which is to become the entry marker for The Domain.

A recent staff report to council reveals the six-figure project is nearing completion.

Staff noted that development approval for the installation of the sculpture near the junction of Williams Road and Ridge Terrace was granted in July.

The fabrication of structural and kinetic elements of the sculpture are undergoing minor engineering refinements.

Council is actively seeking inputs from Burrandies Aboriginal Corporation of Mount Gambier on improving the landscape surrounding the proposed sculpture, including incorporating some of the local indigenous stories and narratives, sourcing of plants that are propagated by aboriginal elders and organising cultural services such as a smoking ceremony and artistic performances as a part of the official opening of the sculpture and the Domain nature playground.

Council officers are currently planning ground works, path works, lighting and landscaping in readiness for implementation when the weather is appropriate.
