Minister elevation

Mount Gambier MLC Ben Hood has been elevated to the position of Assistant Minister for Regional South Australia on the Liberal front bench.

In announcing the appointment, Leader of the Opposition David Speirs said since joining the State Liberal Parliamentary team in February, Mr Hood had proven himself to be an excellent advocate for South Australia’s regions – not least through his tireless support for the more than 16,000 members of the Limestone Coast community who have been calling for radiation treatment services closer to home.

Another strong regional voice in the Liberal Opposition, Mr Hood grew up on a farming property in the South East and currently lives in Mount Gambier with his wife Ellen and their three children.

He also previously served as Deputy Mayor for the Mount Gambier City Council.

Mr Speirs said he had no doubt Mr Hood will excel in his new role as Shadow Assistant Minister for Regional South Australia.

“Ben Hood is deeply passionate about regional South Australia and ensuring those who live and work in our regions have the same opportunities as those in the city,” Mr Speirs said.

“I recently made my eighth trip to the South East since becoming Leader of the Opposition, and it was fantastic to work alongside Ben at meetings with residents, community groups and businesses.

“It was clear to see Ben has already earned the respect of our regional communities, and I have complete confidence he will continue to be an outstanding advocate for regional South Australia in his new role with the Liberal Party.”

Shadow Minister for Regional South Australia Nicola Centofanti commended the elevation of Mr Hood into his new role.

“I have been fortunate to know Ben for a long time and he is a person who genuinely dedicated to the best outcomes for his community and the hardworking people of the South East,” Dr Centofanti said.

“Ben’s appointment is yet another strong indicator of the Liberal Party’s focus on the regions across the state to ensure they thrive as the backbone of the state’s economy.

“I know Ben’s success will continue to blossom and I look forward to working closely with him as the Liberal Party continues its fight for the regions to be seen and heard against a city-centric Malinauskas Labor Government.”

Mr Hood said he was committed to being a strong voice for South Australia’s regions.

“Regional communities need regional voices advocating for their unique needs and aspirations and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to serve as Shadow Assistant Minister for Regional South Australia,” Mr Hood said.

“Since entering Parliament, I have been focussed on achieving better outcomes for regional South Australians – in particular, improving regional health services and the skills and housing shortage – so this new role is the perfect fit.

“Regional South Australia is the heart and soul of our state, and I will continue to stand up for those who live and work there.”
