Motherhood more than biology

When we hear the word “mother,” it’s easy to picture the traditional roles – the woman who brings a child into the world, the one who packs the lunches, reads the bedtime stories, and kisses scraped knees.

But the truth is, motherhood runs so much deeper than biology or daily tasks.

A mother is defined not by a title, but by her heart. She is the person who shows up – again and again – with love, patience, strength, and understanding.

A mother could be someone who gave birth, someone who chose to step into a child’s life through marriage or fostering, or even a grandmother, aunt, sister, or friend who became the constant, nurturing presence someone needed.

Love is what defines a mother.

It’s unconditional, fierce and often silent.

It’s in the little moments: the listening ear at the end of a hard day, the extra slice of cake tucked into a lunchbox, the whispered “you have got this” before an exam or a job interview.

It’s the unwavering belief in you, even when you cannot quite believe in yourself yet.

A mother is also defined by her strength.

She holds her family up when life gets heavy.

She’s the one who worries quietly in the background while encouraging everyone else to be brave.

She’s the calm voice during storms, the steady hand when everything feels uncertain.

She does not have all the answers (even though we sometimes expect her to), but she shows us the power of trying, caring and never giving up.

Importantly, motherhood is

also about growth – both theirs and ours.

Mothers are not perfect. They stumble, they learn, and they evolve alongside their children.

Sometimes being a mother means apologising when you get it wrong, forgiving yourself for not always being everything you wish you could be, and showing your kids that mistakes are part of life too.

A mother is someone who makes space – space for dreams, space for tears, space for mistakes, and space for triumphs.

She teaches by example how to love, how to forgive, and how to stand tall.

And just as importantly, a mother is defined by how she makes you feel. Safe. Loved. Accepted. Supported. Celebrated. Cherished.

Whether you’re five-years-old with a crayon masterpiece in your hand, or 55-years-old facing life’s challenges, a mother’s love is a soft place to land and a source of unshakable strength.

On days like Mother’s Day, it’s a reminder that being a mother is a beautiful tapestry of countless small acts of love stitched together over a lifetime.

It’s not just in the grand gestures – it’s in the everyday moments, the ones we sometimes take for granted, that true motherhood shines.

Whether you’re a biological mum, a stepmum, an Oma, a carer, or someone who has stepped into a nurturing role, you are the true definition of a mother.

And on Mother’s Day, we celebrate you – for all the ways, big and small, that you make the world a softer, safer, more beautiful place.
