Mount Burr sportsman remembered

The tragic death from pancreatic cancer in 2019 of 30-year-old Mount Burr sportsman Bryce Pollard will be recalled on Sunday.

Some of his former team mates will take part in a cricket match in his memory at “Mick” and Jean Walker Oval at Mount Bur.

The light-hearted match involves cricketers and footballers and follows the inaugural grand final of the Millicent Naracoorte Cricket Association played the previous day.

Bryce represented both Mount Burr sporting clubs each summer and winter and was a popular figure with the Mozzies.

The first such memorial match was played a year ago but there were some hiccups in the timing for the 2022 game.

Sue Pollard, mother of Bryce, said the prevalence of the COVID virus meant it may have had to be scrapped.

“However, we were able to settle on Sunday as the date,” Ms Pollard said.

“The COVID situation means some of Bryce’s mates will not be able to come back from Adelaide to play cricket as they did last year.”

Before the delivery of the first ball, speeches of tribute to Bryce will made on the hallowed turf.

Meanwhile, Mount Burr footballers in all four grades donned purple socks in their home match against Kongorong last season as a fundraiser for the Australian Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.

The socks cost the club around $600 and the fund-raising stunt had the blessing of the league officials.

Raffle tickets were also be sold at “Mick” and Jean Walker Oval and there were collection tins.

Organiser and Mount Burr stalwart Adam Wiese urged all to support the Australian Pancreatic Cancer Foundation PlayinPurple as well as honour the memory of popular past Mozzie footballer and cricketer.
